We are frequently asked for a list of our recommended supplies and have created this page for our new puppy owners. As you are anxiously waiting for your new puppy to be old enough to go home you may as well go shopping and get those needed items before bringing home your new family member!
These are not all necessary items, but will give you ideas of things you may want to purchase. North States Pet YardWe highly recommend an exercise pen for your puppy. It is portable, so it can be taken on trips, used outside or inside your home to confine your puppy to a smaller area while potty training. This product comes with six panels and extension panels are available to increase the size. We use this product for training our puppies. This provides a safe area for your puppy when you are unable to supervise them. You can purchase this online or your local petstore. Wal-Mart and Target in the childrens dept. We purchase ours at our local Farm and Fleet for around $60 on sale. ![]() Safety Gate If you have stairs, you should consider getting a gate to block them off while your puppy is too young to understand heights. Young puppies could run straight through stair railings or fall down stairs injuring themselves. There are many styles and sizes available online and your local pet store to suit your needs. CrateWe will provide a small crate for your puppy which is the perfect size for training and transporting your puppy to the vet. Your adult Cavalier will require a larger crate. You may use a wire or a plastic crate. We recommend the Vari Kennel 200 for your adult. If you prefer a wire crate we recommend ProSelect and Midwest brands. You will need the small size ( 24x17x20 ). Crate padsWe really like these sheepskin beds....they come in different sizes, are washable, fit inside the crate and are fairly inexpensive. Available at pet stores and online. Buy several so you have extras while the other is being washed. We will supply a crate pad which fits inside the crate we provide for your new puppy. Food and water bowlsYou will need two bowls....one for water and one for food. We recommend the ProSelect non-tip stainless steel bowls. This bowl has a rubber edged base designed to prevent slipping and spillage during feeding Collar or harness and leadWe prefer a harness for young puppies. We provide a small harness and a 6 ft lead in your going home package. Your puppy's collar or harness should always be removed when he/she is in a crate to prevent possible injury. ![]() Tearless Puppy Shampoo We will provide a bottle of Lambert Kay Fresh n Clean tearless puppy shampoo. You will find many good shampoos at pet stores and online. Please do not use human shampoo on your puppy. You will find instructions on bathing your Cavalier in our "Cavalier Care Manual" given to all new owners. Grooming SuppliesThese are some basic grooming supplies you will probably want to have on hand. Starting on the left of the photo; a slicker brush, a pin brush, a metal comb, nail clippers. and Kwik Stop. Kwik Stop is for those times you accidentally quick the dog and the toenail bleeds a bit.) You will find instructions on trimming your Cavalier's nails along with photo's in our care manual. In addition to these items you will need a small boar bristle brush for brushing your Cavalier. Detailed information on grooming your Cavalier can be found in our "Cavalier Care Manuel". ![]() Training Treats Some type of small, soft treats are always nice for training purposes. We use Wellness Puppy Treats for our puppies and include a bag in your puppy's care package. In the begining you will use lots of treats....we recommend breaking each treat into several small pieces. Puppy Dental Care KitThis is a great thing to start from puppyhood! Get your puppy used to having it's mouth handled and teeth brushed. We will go over details on how to do this during our get aquainted visit. Keeping your Cavalier's teeth clean will help prevent tartar and gum disease and save a lot of money for you and problems for your dog in the long run. ![]() Kong Toys Kong brand toys are great! The ones that can be stuffed with food or treats work well to keep your puppy entertained and busy for a while too. You might even feed him a small portion of his daily ration from the Kong! (The one in the middle works great for this.) ToysOf course squeaky toys, rope toys, balls and other toys are fun to have! Nylabone Nylabone is also a good brand for chew bones and other chew toys your puppy will enjoy during the teething and chewing stage. Bully SticksThese are one of the best chew sticks you can get for your dog! They come in various shapes and sizes. They are a bit expensive, but your puppy will love them and they help remove tartar from teeth. This is the setup we recommend for your new puppy....a nice safe confined area when you are not able to have the puppy right with you under your supervision or you must be at work, etc. We are using the North States Pet Yard mentioned above with two additional panels. The unit comes with six panels and this size is perfect for one puppy. Here the puppies have their bed, a crate, food and water, and several toys. You can see their potty area in the lower right corner. Even if you are training your puppy to potty outside this is a nice setup to keep your puppy safe during those times you are unable to supervise your puppy.
